From May 12 to 25, a group of enthusiastic participants embarked on a transformative two-week mobility programme on the island of Skopelos, Greece. Designed to blend professional development with cultural immersion and environmental awareness, the programme offered a hands-on introduction to sustainable tourism in action.

The experience began with a visit to Spira Brewery, a local business that exemplifies entrepreneurial spirit and sustainable practices. This opening session provided participants with an understanding of the challenges and opportunities faced by small enterprises in island communities. From there, students were placed in rotational internships across a diverse range of local businesses—including hotels, beach bars, travel agencies, and traditional shops—where they gained practical skills in hospitality management, customer service, and daily operations.

Beyond vocational training, the programme placed strong emphasis on cultural heritage and local identity. Participants explored Skopelos’ rich history through guided tours of museums and iconic sites, including the famous Mamma Mia filming locations, which draw thousands of visitors each year. A highlight was a traditional Rebetiko music dinner, offering an authentic taste of the island’s musical traditions and the communal spirit of its people.

Sustainability was not only a topic of discussion but a lived experience throughout the programme. Participants engaged in a beach clean-up and trail restoration project, actively contributing to the protection of the island’s natural environment. Visits to local food producers highlighted the importance of short supply chains, organic farming, and eco-conscious consumer habits—key elements in promoting sustainable tourism.
Throughout the two weeks, the programme fostered intercultural exchange, team spirit, and a deeper appreciation for both the professional and ethical dimensions of working in tourism. By directly engaging with the island’s businesses, traditions, and environment, participants developed a holistic understanding of what it means to be a responsible global citizen in the field of tourism.
In sum, the Skopelos mobility programme was more than just a training initiative. It was an immersive journey of learning, contribution, and discovery, equipping future professionals with the tools and values needed to shape a more inclusive and sustainable tourism industry.
